P&O Maritime and Marine Institute Ireland
Since 2016, we have been providing satellite communication services to P&O Maritime for the benefit of its client, Marine Institute Ireland, the state agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation. The Institute provides scientific and technical advice to the Irish government to inform policy and support the sustainable development of the country’s marine resources.
P&O Maritime operates the Marine Institute’s two research vessels, the RV Celtic Explorer and the RV Celtic Voyager, located on the west coast of Ireland. VIP delivers and manages the VSAT communication platform for both, ensuring that a dedicated always-on service is in place, thus allowing for real time transfer of survey information to shore. P&O Maritime has recently moved both vessels to our VSAT Ku pooled service.
Through its work with both organisations, we became a partner in the Eurofleets Horizon 2020 Eurofleets+ project, co-ordinated by the Institute. We are providing recommendations on standardising communications abroad the largest advanced research vessel fleet across Europe, Greenland, USA, Canada, Bermuda. Eurofleets+ is a consortium of 42 marine institutes, universities, foundations and SMEs from 24 countries.
Gordon Furey, instrumentation & information technology manager, P&O Maritime, said, “Voyager IP was able to offer excellent overall coverage locally around Europe and also for international surveys extending to Greenland and the North Atlantic, from Europe to the east coast of Canada and the USA.
Voyager IP was also able to meet our requirements to change CIR from survey to survey if we required faster connectivity for telecoms outreach programmes. The team at Voyager IP are very professional to deal with and I look forward to working with them to meet the vessel communication requirements over the coming years,” Gordon continued.
